PRODUCE CHARGE INQUIRY
ARBITRATOR TO SIT ALONE
DECISION TO DISPENSE WITH ASSESSORS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 28. The inquiry into the dispute between retailers and growers over charges for fruit and vegetable containers will be conducted alone by the arbitrator, M? G. G. G. Watson, a barrister, of Wellington. The decision to proceed with the inquiry without assessors was made at a meeting to-day of representatives of the Retail Fruiterers’ £nd Greengrocers’ Association and of the Dominion council of Market Gardeners, Ltd., and the Fruitgrowers’ Federation. This meeting was presided over by the Director of Marketing (Mr L. C. Webb). Agreement was reached on the order of reference for the inquiry, but this will not be available for publication for a day or so. After the meeting, Mr Webb and representatives of the parties met Mr Watson, and it was decided to begin arbitration on March 8. It was also agreed that the proceedings should be open to the press. The hearing of the dispute is expected to take most of next week.
