FRANCES HODGKINS IN ART GALLERIES
Sir,—lf the Canterbury Society of Arts genuinely wanted to buy “an example of Frances Hodgkins’ best work” it missed an excellent opportunity. During my recent visit to England I was in close touch with the art section of the British Council, which acquired world fame througn its magnificent exhibitions of British art. Mrs Somerville selected ' for Christchurch a representative collection of the latest and, according to experts, finest work of Frances Hodgkins. This, I repeat, was hot good enough for the Canterbury Society of Arts; it turned down all six of them. I now offer 15 guineas towards the purchase for Christchurch of “The Pleasure Garden,” a very fine picture of a subject she treated often. (Several versions are reproduced in the Penguin book on Frances Hodgkins, published last month.) ■ * Another 79 guineas are needed. I shall be happy to receive donations. Will you, Sir, do the same?—Yours, etc., MARGARET FRANKEL. February 28, 1949. [We shall receive on Mrs Frankel’s behalf any- donations that may be more conveniently sent to this office than to her.—Ed., “The Press.”!
