"VICTORIAN RUBBISH”

Sir, —In your issue of Friday you quote Mrs Frankel as saying that the recent exhibition of Chautrey purchases at Burlington House was a “collection of Victorian rubbish.” Without knowing just what was exhibited it is impossible to dispute this statement, but I would remind Mrs Frankel that these paintings were th? popular works of their day and the modern works Which are being purchased are the popular works of our day. In 50 years time they will doubtless be a “collection of mid twentieth century rubbish.” Each generation thinks its taste is impeccable; and I can imagine our grandchildren roaring with laughter at our modern art as heartily as wo laugh at the Victorians, and possibly with more reason.— Yours, etc., COLIN LOVELL-SMITH. February 26, 1949.
