Rising Pillage Claims in Melbourne.— Pillage claims for the Port of Melbourne averaged 2s 2d a ton last year, or more than twice the 1947 figure, said the chairman of the Melbourne Steamship Company. Ltd.. Mr D. York Syme, at the halfyearly meeting in Melbourne last week. The average cargo claim in 1941 was 6d a ton. Inter-State cargo had been plentiful, said the chairman, but serious delays had been brought about by insufficient wharf labour, disputes, and the 40-hour week.
