WAR MATERIALS FOR U.S.

STOCKS 39 PER CENT. COMPLETE REPORT BY MUNITIONS BOARD (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON. January 25. The United States stockpile ot strategic war materials is now 39 per cent, completed, the Munitions Board reported to-day. The chairman of the board (Mr Donald Carpenter) said that the board had now filled stockpiling quotas for 34 items on the critical list. Another 14 items were from 50 per cent, to 90 per cent, complete. The programme was started in July, 1946. The critical list includes asbestos, bauxite, chromite, diamonds, lead, manganese, mercury, platinum, quinine, rubber, tin, tungsten, and zinc. The statement did not disclose which items had been completed. The report added that the swift stockpiling of critical materials had become so urgent that the possible effect on the civilian economy would no longer be considered a limitation. It said: “In the earlier phases of stockpiling, the policy was to make purchases only where they would not conflict with civilian demands. Under the new policy this limitation is no longer effective.”
