CONFERENCE AT NEW DELHI
“LEADERSHIP IN EAST ASIA ASSUMED” VIEW OF PHILIPPINES DELEGATE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 26. “I think that one of the most important achievements of the New Delhi conference has been that by ass.uming the leadership in East Asia we have prevented Communism from capturing the faith of Asians by default,” said Brigadier-General Carlos P. Romulo, chief Philippines delegate to the United Nations and leader of the Philippine .delegation to’ the New Delhi conference, in an interview with Reuter’s correspondent to-day. General Romulo described Communism as “far more pernicious than colonialism. Colonialism, in spite of its many vices, has very many virtues. Communism has no redeeming feature. It is the worst form of totalitarianism, which denies the dignity of the individual.” Describing the Communist victory in China as the gravest threat for Southeast Asia, Generl Romulo added: “The greater part of the world’s population is in Asia. In this area we have all the things Russia needs and will need most. All Communist long-term plans are directed towards cbntroUing them.
“In New Delhi we created a third bloc which can perhaps be a balance of power between the present two blocs. Yet we threatened nobody. We made agreements to pool neither our navies nor othef armed rights. We pooled only our righteous indignation and laid the foundation for an additional bulwark for world peace within the framework of the United Nations.’’ *
