MATERIALS FOR BUILDING
SUPPLY PROSPECTS THIS YEAR “DEMAND WILL CONTINUE TO EXCEED SUPPLY” (P.A.) WELLINGTON. January 26. “Prospects of any substantial improvement in the supply of building material in the current year are not good, and it appears that the demand will continue to exceed the supply ” said the Building Controller (Mr R. L. MacPhail) to-day. “Timber will be more plentiful, but metal building materials and all steel products are in short supply, with reinforcing steel critically short. “Large-sized drain pipes and screwed galvanised wrought iron piping are also difficult to obtain. Apart from corrugated asbestos cement and iron, roofing materials are in easier supply because of imports of aluminium. and the large increase in the production of tiles. There is a fairly good suoply of builders’ hardware, but only a limited choice.
“An improvement in the supply of wallboard is expected from March, and substantial quantities of raw materials are being imported for this industry. The cement problem may become more acute when the demands of the new hydro-electric works increase during the winter.”
