“SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL” IN LONDON
The first night of Sir Laurence Olivier’s production of Sheridan’s “School for Scandal” at the New Theatre. London, drew large audiences. Thirty-six hours before the doors of the theatre opened the first of hundreds of people who queued for unsold gallery seats brought stools and chairs and established themselves on the footpath. The stalls and dress circle were filled with one of the most notable assemblies of distinguished people seen at any London first night since the war.
Among the gathering of stage and screen notabilities who had come to watch were Sir Ralph and Lady Richardson. Lady Hardwicke, Mr and Mrs David Niven. Sir Alexander Korda. Sir Michael Balcon. Robert Helpmann, and Margot Fonteyn. Critics were unanimous in applauding the production.
