Heavy Vehicle Licences.— Only about a third of the owners of heavy vehicles in the Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough districts have sent in their warrants of fitness to the Transport Department as required by the Transport Law Amendment Act, 1948. Heavy transport vehicles were formerly given warrants of fitness by garages and local authorities such as city councils, but the. new law requires that the licences be issued by the Transport Department, and the vehicles inspected by officers of the department. An officer of the Transport Department in Christchurch said yesterday that all that was required was that owners send in their warrants of fitness, and 10s, and the department would issue a temporary licence, pending an inspection of the vehicles by departmental officers.
