YOUTH ASSEMBLY
N.Z. INVITED TO COUNCIL MEETING
New Zealand is included in a total of 45 United Nations countries invited to send representatives to the provisional council for the International Youth Assembly, which was set up at the International Youth Conference held in London last August. The main business of the provisional council will be to consider the resolutions taken by the International Youth Conference, to arrange for the circulation of the report, and to prepare for the ratification of the charter of the International Youth Assembly. It will also prepare for the first full council of the conference, which will probably be held in the summer of 1949, and will consider arrangements for summoning the first meeting of the International Youth Assembly. The purpose of the International Youth Assembly as defined in the charter is as follows: "To foster international understanding by practical co-opera-tive work between its members; to strive towards an adequate serving of the needs of youth throughout the world; to enable youth itself to take an active part in the field of international co-operation; to maintain relations with international voluntary and intergovernmental organisations.’’ The provisional council will be held at Ashridge Hall. Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. from February 14 to 18. The invitation will also be extended to “colonies, protectorates, and mandated territories” which were represented in the national delegations to the August conference. In addition to these members of the United Nations, the conference has agreed to send invitations to Eire. Finland, Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland to send observer* to the provisional council.
