FINAL TRIAL FOR N.Z. TEAM

CRICKET

MATCH STARTS TO-DAY The last of the trial matches to help in the selection of the New Zealand crioket team which is to tour England this year will begin at Lancaster Park to-day. Although the result of the game will matter little, the cricket should be extremely interesting. The composition of the two teams suggests that the batsmen to be included in the touring party have already been selected, except for the last place perhaps, and that the selectors will be interested mostly in the performance of the bowlers. Two bowlers, J. Cowie (Auckland) and T. B. Burtt (Canterbury) are not included, and it may be that these two are certainties. Burtt has done little of note this season, but he appearsto be easily the best spin bowler in the country. Each Of to-day’s teams includes five bowlers, and they have the best batsmen in the country opposed to them, so the test should be a fair one. It is safe to assume that the final selection will not be made exclusively from the 22 players engaged in to-day’s match. Apart from Cowie and Burtt, there are several such players who might find a place in the team. Those with the best prospects are G. Rabone (Wellington), JG. Leggat (Canterbury), G. Overton (Otago), D, D. Taylor (Auckland), and D. M. Dunnett (Otago).
