RESEARCH WITHIN N.Z. UNIVERSITY

SENATE’S OPINIONS ON PUBLICITY (P.A.) WELLINGTON. January 26. The report of a special committee which considered the freedom of publication data compiled in research within the University was adopted unanimously at to-day’s session of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. The committee’s recommendation was as follows: “In the normal course (here should be freedom of publication of all research undertaken at the University. This freedom of publication has been an essential part of the character of the universities of Western civilisation and is inseparable from their treasured function—the pursuit bf truth and its application to the benefit and use of man. “When, however, the circumstances affect the national safety and jeopardise the very rights upon which free inquiry depends, a member of the University can properly undertake secret research within the University.”
