FIELD DAY AT HAREWOOD

CANTERBURY AERO CLUB’S EVENTS A Canterbury Aero Club field day yesterday began with a dawn flight to an unknown destination. Three club machines were led to a landing field at the mouth of the Conway river in North Canterbury. After breakfast at a farmer’s homestead the aircraft were flown back to Harewood, landing there about 9.30 a.m. A bombing and landing competition in the afternoon was watched with interest by club members and visitors. Each aircraft was equipped with two “bombs,” made from bags of sand, to be dropped from about 400 ft on to a target in the aerodrome. The 16 competitors were also judged on their skill in landing. The competition was won by Mr N F. Marriott. Mr W. Bettie was second. The bombing test was held to help in the selection of a Canterbury Aero Club representative to appear at the Royal New Zealand Aero Club pageant during the centenary celebrations at Dunedin. After the bombing competition a display of aerobatics was given by Mr J. Neave (assistant club instructor).
