LABOUR SHORTAGE
Sir,—Regarding the acute shortage of labour and the daily radio appeals to all and sundry to do a little work during the holidays to help the "Aid for Britain ’ campaign, may I point out that there is one class from which some help could be obtained. There are age beneficiaries between 60 and 70 who could earn more than the £52 per annum which is the limit set by the Social Security Department. They could earn more in useful toil, but they will not, because, as an equivalent sum will be deducted from their next year s allowance, they would be working for nothing. Many of them could use the extra money as there may be an ailing wife or some other liability to be met. Why cannot their allowable earnings be increased, or even the means test be suspended temporarily?—Yours, etc., CHRISTIAN SPIRIT. December 12, 1947.
