AIR MAIL LETTER CARDS

Sir, —Two or three years ago. as I remember, the Associated Chambers of Commerce pointed out to the Post and Telegraph Department of New Zealand that its air-letter forms, with their two useless side-flaps, were much inferior to the sensible English ones, and the department officially admitted this, saying that when stocks were used up, the English pattern would be adopted. A long time has passed, but nothing has been done. With a small mirror, a kitchen knife, and some patience, one can read the contents of a letter written on the New Zealand form while it is still sealed. That is not possible with the English form, on which there is more useful space, but no more paper is used. Finally, the English form only needs one fold in manufacture, whereas the New Zaaland form takes two. It should be cheaper to produce the better and more private form.—Yours, etc.. NEW ZEALANDER IN LONDON. London, October 7, 1947. [lt was stated at the General Post Office, Wellington, that the local manufacturers of the air-mail letter forms have now obtained from England a machine for cutting the forms to the English design. Technical difficulties have arisen, however, in gumming the two flaps. As soon as these can be overcome supplies of the new style form will.be placed on sale. It is hoped to obtain a more opaque paper for the forms.]
