CURRENT NOTES

Miss Jerome Spencer (Rissington. Hawke’s Bay), who is visiting Christchurch. will return north to-morrow. She was the founder, 25 years ago, of Women’s Institutes in New Zealand, and so great has been the growth of the movement that there are now 890 institutes in the Dominion with a membership of about 26,000.

Dean Fancourt and «Mrs Fancourt (Auckland) will arrive in Christchurch on Tuesday to visit their son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs T. L. Fancourt, Merivale.

A splendid effort was made at a bring and buy sale recently by the Redcliffs-Mount Pleasant Junior Red Cross in aid of funds. The sum raised was about £9O. Parcels have been sent to the women’s wards of the Burwood Hospital.

A Christmas gift of nearly 10001 b of fat from the Christchurch 4 Junior Red Cross will soon reach a children’s hospital in England. This was purchased with the proceeds from the Red Cross exhibitign held in November. •The final meeting for the year of the women’s auxiliary of the Kaiapoi Returned Services’ Association was held as a Christmas party. The president (Mrs S. J. Richards) presented Mrs Eric Gray with a gift. Mrs Gray has been patron of the auxiliary for many years. She and her husband will leave New Zealand-for England soon.

That goods received in Europe through the British Red Cross are finding their way into homes where they are appreciated is shown in a letter received by the Victoria League in Auckland from a 20-year-old Jugoslav girl student. Writing from Graz, the main town of Styria, Austria, where she is living as a refugee, the girl. Herburg Schober, says that after losing all her possessions during the war she was obliged to earn the money she needed for her studies. She worked two days a week in an office for advising and helping refugees. “The poverty and misery of the refugees is great,” she writes. ‘‘Many of them do not know where they will sleep to-night and if they will have a piece of bread to-morrow. You cannot imagine what your donations mean to us. Not only I. but hundreds of men. women and children are obliged to you people for the many gifts you send to Europe.” A crying baby was branded as a nuisance in a Court order at Memphis, Tennessee. The parents were evicted from their apartment under the order. The eviction order, signed by Judge William Bacon, who is aged 70 and has no children, said that “property owners have the right to live peaceably and undisturbed in their homes.” A child who cries excessively disturbed their rest and came under the heading of a nuisance. The parents of the child said that they would fight the eviction. The mother said: “We were going to move, but now we have changed our minds.”

A silver tea service and a monetary gift were presented by the Dairy Herd improvement Association to Miss M. McGimpsey at a gathering held in her honour recently at the Milford Hall. Mr Andrew Johnston, who made the presentation, said that during the five years she had been herd-testing officer. Miss McGimpsey had at all times carried out her duties Commendably. Mr Colin Howe, consulting officer of the New Zealand Dairy Board, praised the service Miss McGimpsey had given as recording officer for the South Canterbury district.
