LANG BIAN

RACING

SUCCESS /OF PROGENY AT TRENTHAM The severe loss that New Zealand breeders suffered by the early death of the sire Lang Bian was never more amply illustrated than at the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. Over the three days of x the meeting the progeny Of Lang Bian Won a total of £6355 in stakes. The star performer was Longsword, whirti, by his successes in the Wellington Handicap and the Harcourt Stakes, won £3085. Lang Bian was represented by still another high-class performer in King’s Ransom, which credited him with £2405 when he won the Wainui and the Watkins Handicaps. Regal Gem received £1135 for winning the Desert Gold Stakes, and was the only other winner at the meeting sired by Lang Bian, but Bian Rouge, Lucy. Bian, Pimlico, Horouta, Revivre, and Mangatiti all gained place money. The youngest stock of Lang Bian are now three-year-olds, and among*them are some very promising sorts that should keep their sire’s name prominent for some time. With a high-class galloper like King’s Ransom to represent him, in addition, Lang Bian’s name is again certain to be well up on the winning sires’ list. Last season he was third to Foxbridge with £33,788, and the previous season second to the sarhe sire with £33,841. Lang Bian invariably imparted stamina to his progeny, and he was the best sire of stayers to stand in this country since Martian. Local Oaks Candidate

Banshee’s success over a mile and -three furlongs in the Heretaunga Hack Handicap at Trentham last Saturday stamped ner as a strong prospect for the New Zealand Oaks at Riccarton next month. The Royal Chief filly was running on nicely at the finish and it did not

look as if another furlong would stop her. Banshee was a creditable fifth in the Desert Gold Stakes after starting from wide out and having to cover extra ground in the running. The puggy going also did not suit her as well as the firmer ground last Saturday. Qn the , heavy track last Monday Banshee was unplaced in the Hinemoa Handicap, but it was the going that beat her. She was well placed all the way and finished sixth. Banshee is an honest filly and her trainer, F. D. Jones, has always had a high opinion of her. She will be well suited by. the firm going at Riccarton and looks the best of the local Oaks candidates. Banshee is also engaged in the New Zealand Derby and would not be out of place in that race, as there does not appear to be a great deal of difference in merit between the three-year-old colts and geldings and the fillies this season. Useful Hack Stayer Spare Part’s form as a three-year-old last season indicated that he may develop into a useful stayer. He ran second to Nigger Lad in the Waimea Hack Han - dicap at Gore last Monday, and was doing his best work at the finish. Spare Part is a half-brother by Salmagundi, to Sieg.tone, which has shown useful hack form on occasions, and he may have to be reckoned with in the distance hack tfaces at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Unlucky In the Running With a better run' Horouta would have won the Tararua Handicap at Trentham on Monday. He was well back entering the straight, and was in about eighth place at the furlong. He finished particularly well and Was doing better than the winner at the post. Like most of the Lang Bian’s, Horouta is at home in heavy going. He looks like running on beyond sprint distances and should not remain long in hack company. Creditable Showing Desert Girl Was having her first race for several months when she finished a creditable third to Red Pickle and Sterling Lad in the Flying Handicap at Gore last* Saturday, after forcing all the pace. Desert Girl should have bright prospects among the southern sprinters when inext produced. Stopped Quickly Citril failed to justify her favouritism in the Tararua Handicap at Trentham on Monday. She began well and was soon in front, but was joined by General Victory nearing the half mile and the latter had her measure with a furlong to run. Citril would have been harder to beat on top of the ground, but nevertheless she .stopped more quickly than expected. Her owner-trainer, F. A. Roberts, has nornintaed Citril for the Levin meeting on November 8, and if Citril races at that meeting she may be accompanied by Primitive.

Colonial Sires Well Represented An interesting feature of the Waverley Racing Club’s meeting on Monday was that seven of the eight races were won by horses by New Zealand-bred sires. The Defaulter mare Aggravation won two hack races. The Hurdles winner, Totara Lad, And one of the maiden winners. Retrieve, are by.Valette; Dunbar, the winner of the Waverley Cup, bv Martarma: Dawn March, winner of the Hack Cup, by Nightmarch; and Morea Fox, the other maiden winner, is by Brer Fox. To Forgo Derby Engagement Coral Arc could not be raced at Trentham because of an injury he suffered when he kicked out playfully while returning .from the tracks one morning and got his hind legs over a fence. He has started work again after a short let up. but his trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, has abandoned any idea of getting him ready for the New Zealand Derby. Last of Francolin’s Progeny Super Flight, the winner of the second division of the Benio Handicap on the first day at Gore, is the tenth winner from the prolific brood mare Francolin, and is the last of her progeny to race. Super Flight, which is by Nizami, went to the front early and made no race of itj She is a half-sister to Royal Flight, Bonny Flight, Gold Flight, and Special Flight, and should add further to the family record. Northern Hack Stayer J. C. Tomkinson brought Pimlico to Riccarton when he returned from the Wellington meeting, and the Lang Bian gelding will remain in his charge for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Pimlico showed useful staying form -when he ran second to Banshee in the Heretaunga Handicap at Trentham last Saturday, and will be a candidate for the distance hack events at Riccarton. Pimlico is trained at Mangateretere by his part-owner, Mr A. W. Meikle. Increased Stakes for Sydney Events Next year’s Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup will carry added prize money. The Australian Jockey Club’s committee decided that these two events will also be governed by the stated maximum weight, 9-10 and 9-7 respectively. The Dopcaster will now be worth £5OOO and the Sydney Cup £BOOO. The Doncaster was worth £3500 and the Sydney Cup £6OOO. It is expected there will be added prize money for next year’s Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps. Nearco Leading Sire As the result of Sayajirao’s win In the St. Leger last month, Nearco is now in an unassailable position in the winning sires’ list in England. He is now £14,592 ahead of Bois Roussel, which has made little progress since the last figures were published. The only other notable alteration in the list is that of Blue Peter, which has advanced into fourth place. Up to October 7, Nearco was represented by 23 winners of 40 races and £41,967. Bois Roussel was next, with 19 winners of n 32 races and £27,375. Then follow Owen Tudor, 10 winners, 16 races, and £22,939; Blue Peter, 16 winners, 35 races, £21,587; Panorama, 20 winners, 39 races, and £20,799; Hyperion, 19 winners, 32 races, £20,472; Fair Trial, 23 winners, 34 races, £18,630; Umidwar, 16 winners, 31 races, £17,529; Windsor Slipper, 10 winners, 19 races, £16,497; Mieuxce, 18 winners, 28 races, £16,488: Epigram, 21 winners, 30 races, £16,281; Canot, 2 winners, 3 races, £15,412. Painful Handicap Aganev did not race to expectations in the Members’ Handicap on the first day at Gore. She was hanging out badly in her race, and it was later found that she had developed a boil on her jaw. Impressive Hack Winner One of the most impressive winning performances among the hacks at the Gore meeting was credited to Nigger Lad. After dead-heating for second behind Geisha Girl in the Kaiwera Hack Handicap on the first day he won the Wairhea Hack .Handicap on Monday in great style. He was badly away from the barrier and was a long way back at the straight entrance, but came home with a paralysing run to win going away. Nigger Lad is a half-brpthei; by Nigger Minstrel to Salmon Spear and Spanish Lad, but he has proved difficult to train because of unsoundness and his grossness. He stripped a better horse at Gove than he has ever done before, and is the type to win a good race before long. Canterbury Jockey Club Entries Entries for the New Zealand Cup meeting, also forfeits for the N.Z. Derby and Oaks Stakes, will close at 5 pan. to-day. —Advt.
