GERMAN GENERALS TO BE TRIED

PROCEEDINGS ORDERED IN U.S. ZONE (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, October 28. A Frankfurt message says that the American War Department has ordered special denazification proceedings against a large number of highranking German generals and admirals now working for the United States Army Historical Division. Included among them are ColonelGeneral Heinz Guderian, architect of Hitler’s panzer armies, and ColonelGeneral Franz Halder, former Wehrmacht chief of staff. Guderian, Halder, and a number of other German senior officers have been co-operating with the American Army historical archives section in •writing the German account of the war and in interpreting captured German documents. The American commander in Germany (General L. Clay) previously opposed direct trials of these German leaders, but is now understood to have been overridden by the War Department. Hitherto these German senior officers have been employed by the War Department on the same terms as the German rocket scientists, although all their work has been done under guard and behind barbed wire. It is now proposed to establish three special denazification tribunals at Neustadt to try all these officers as militarists.
