ALLIED COUNCIL FOR JAPAN

NEW COMMONWEALTH MEMBER (Rec. 11 pin.) CANBERRA August 27. Mr P. Shaw, a counsellor of the Australian External Affairs Department, has been appointed to succeed Mr W. McMahon Ball as British Commonwealth representative on the Allied Council for Japan. His appointment was approved by both the British and New Zealand governments. His previous experience in Japan and China and his knowledge of the languages prompted Mr Shaw’s appointment to Tokyo. He was second secretary under Sir John Latham, who was Australian Minister to Japan when the Japanese war broke out, aqd he did not rfeturn to Australia until early in 1943. Since then he has been in New Zealand and China. Mr Shaw is regarded as one of the department a ' most promising younger men. He left Canberra to-day for Japan.
