CHATHAM CUP FINAL

TECHNICAL BEATEN IN HARD GAME (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 24. Waterside (Wellington) won the Chatham Association football cup by beating Technical Old Boys (Christchurch) by 2 goals to 1, after extra time had been played, on the Basin Reserve on Saturday. Waterside won the competition in: 1938. 1939, and 1940. Christchurch Technical has not held the cup. Conditions were ideal and about 6000 spectators witnessed the contest. The cup was, subsequently presented to the winners by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg. On paper, Christchurch Technical appeared the stronger side, having three New Zealand representatives, R. Davey. V. Smith, and P. O'Malley, compared with one international, Harris, in the Waterside team. On the play, the sides were evenly matched. Waterside won because it was a more rugged team forward, by reason of Healy’s performance in goal, and the solidity of the backs on defence, especially when the full-back line was reinforced towards the close of the game. The game was a hard one rather than an exhibition of polished football. The visitors used more constructive tactics than Waterside. Their backs frequently advanced to leave the Waterside forwards offside. Bell and Janes scored for Waterside, and Bailey scored for Technical. N.Z. SCHOOLBOY TEAM IN SYDNEY (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 24. In the first schoolboys Association football test at the Sydney Cricket Ground

yesterday, Australia beat New Zealand by 1 goal to 0. Both teams played good, open football, in spite of wet, muddy conditions. The game was scoreless until midway through the second half, when the Australian centre forward, de Paoli, beat the

New Zealand goalie, Gubb, with a low shot.

The New Zealanders will play New South Wales to-morrow. They will travel to Brisbane to play the second test next Saturday.
