PRIZE-WINNING ESSAYS ANNOUNCED
Three New Zealand school pupils were awarded prizes, and 10 were commended in the 1946 essay competitions held by the Royal Empire Society. The prize-winners from the Dominion were as follows:—Robert Fairgray Macaulay, Waitaki Boys’ High School, who won the Margaret Best Prize for his entry in class A; Herbert Sydney Jenks. Waitaki Boys’ High School (first prize, class B); and John Mercer, King’s Preparatory School, Auckland (first prize, class C). The subjects set for the three classes were as follows: —Class A, “Discuss the trends of commercial policy within the British Empire since.lB9s, and indicate what you think the right policy now”; class B, “Which statesman do you consider did most for the British Empire in the periods since 1783? Justify your choice”; class C, “Describe what you would see on a journey by air from your country to one of the following capitals: —London, Ottawa, Canberra, Wellington, Cape Town, New Delhi.”
New Zealand entries commended bv the examiner were those of 'Derek Roxby Preston, Waitaki Boys’. High School; Joan Metge, Epsom Girls’ Grammar School; George William Hinde, Whangarei High School; Harold Galt, correspondence school, Wellington (class A entrants); Eva Gourie, correspondence school, Wellington; Lenore Eyton, correspondence school, Wellington (class B), W. J. Duncan (Waitaki Boys’ High School), Rex Edward Tarbotton, Tokanui, Southland; and J. H. Stubbs, Waitaki Boys’ High School (class C).
Commenting on the number of entries in each of the classes, the examiner, Mr A. T. Milne, said that New Zealand had been a mainstay. The winner of the Margaret Best Prize, Macaulay, “worthily maintains the traditions of a famous name and a famous school,” said Mr Milne. Two New Zealand entrants in class B picked out General Smuts, said Mr Milne. All three of the prize-winning entries in «this class were written about Lord Durham.
First prize in the third class was awarded to “an original ‘Gremlin’ story very cleverly worked out.”
