A PHASE of retail selling . . . that became a regular business practice some years ago . . . and which is in vogue to-day as much as ever ... is that hidden cache of desirable goods that are carefully kept secretly “ under the counter ” away from the eyes of the casual customer and held in reserve for “ specials.” Some humorists have gone so far as to assert that many shop assistants have developed a “ stoop ” or roundness of the back as a result. Of course the practice is quite satisfactory if you happen to be a “ special ” customer . . - and far from satisfactory if you are not. But what is a retailer to do with so many things in short supply ?
