SEED TRADE IN NEW ZEALAND
« MERCHANTS FACE HEAVY LOSS” LARGE QUANTITIES REMAIN UNSOLD (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 22. The seed trade in New Zealand is facing a crisis with the loss of hundreds of thousands of pounds to merchants throughout the country an immediate possibility, according to a member of the trade in Dunedin. New Zealand exporters holding large quantities of seed bought at high prices last season find there is great difficulty in disposing of it to overseas buyers, he said. White clover, Montgomery red clover, cowgrass, certified perennial ryegrass, t and Chewings fescue were the principal lines which were lying in stores. The price for white clover had declined by about a third in Dunedin, that for ryegrass by about half, and there had been a similar decline in prices on the other lines. An important factor contributing to the crisis had been rhe embargo imposed by the British Government on the importation of New Zealand white clover and perennial ryegrass, he added.
