RUSSIA SUPPORTS EGYPT
Complaint Against Britain “COUNCIL BOUND TO ACT ’’ (N2. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 20. Russia to-day, in its first statement on the Egyptian case, backed Egypt’s request that the United Nations should order the immediate evacuation of British troops from Egyptian soil. The Russian delegate (Mr Gromyko) told the Security Council that a continued dispute would threaten world peace, and that the Council was bound to take action.
Russia’s support of Egypt was announced when Brazil moved a resolution suggesting that Britain and Egypt resume direct negotiations, and keep the United Nations advised of progress. Brazil’s resolution also provided that if the negotiations failed the case should be referred to the International Court of Justice.
The Brazilian delegate said 'that he sav< no threat to world peace. Direct negotiations had not been exhausted, and the Council had no authority to set aside a treaty. (Britain contends that the presence of British troops is covered by the 20-year treaty signed in 1936.)
The Council adjourned until August 22.
