CLOTHES RATIONING

Sir, —As a fellow Australian I would like to endorse the remarks of Rita P. Massey about clothes rationing in Australia, published in “The Press” this morning. Since coming to New Zealand six months ago I have noted with amazement the exceedingly high prices here. While I cannot very definitely quote prices for men’s clothing, I can say as regards women’s clothing that the prices in Australia are mostly about half the price of those here. I doubt if anyone would be able to find twin sets costing as much as £6-odd in Australia, as was advertised in “The Press” this morning. I would judge from the statements of Mr T. A. M. Quirk, of Invercargill, in “The Press” of August 18 that he is probably quoting Sydney prices, which are higher than anywhere else in Australia.— Yours, etc., JEAN LOTHIAN. August 19, 1947.
