CONSCRIPTION IN BRITAIN
LABOUR GROUP TO ' OPPOSE BILL MOTION FOR REJECTION TABLED (Bee. 8.30 pjn.) LONDON, March 20. “A Labour motion for the rejection of the National Service Bill was tabled last night, and is said to have the backing of 60 members of the party,” says the Parliamentary correspondent of “The Times.” “The sponsors of the motion believe that by the time the second-reading debate takes place it will have the Ripport of at least 80 Labour members.” The correspondent added that the Government supporters who oppose the bill include both a small pacifist group which objects to conscription on conscientious grounds and thei larger number who have been continuously pressing for the reduction of the strength of the forces. They hold that Britain cannot afford to maintain lucre than 1,000.000 men under arms to peace time.
