FLOCK RAM FAIR

KEEN DEMAND FOR SOUTHDOWNS GOOD PRICES PAID Southdowns met a better demand than tho r’p, me * ? ear£ L at 4116 o P eni ng day of J{j e Christchurch flock ram fair, held at the Showgrounds yesterday. Values were smout 4gns a head better on the average than they< were last year, and the deo’ 38 sustained throughout the sale. ine Southdowns accounted for more than half the entry of mutton breeds offered yesterday. They totalled 1361, a substantial reduction on the 1792 offered last year. Most of- the main Canterbury studs were represented, and a number of sheep came as usual from the leading Marlborough breeders. *Ol6 yarding was of good, though not outstanding quality, and most of the rams showed evidence of careful preparation for the fair. There was little of the lowconditioned "tail” forward last year, as the season had been good. •Buyers were present in largQ numbers. The sale opened briskly, and maintained a steady pace all day. _ T°P Price was 31gns for a single from W E. Moorhead (Scnithbridge). J. D. Galpin (Southbridge) sold a single at 28gns, J. D. Madeley (Kaiapoi) sold a single at 24gns, and Mrs G. E. Adams (Greendale) one at 22gns. The best price for a pen was 21gns, secured by the estate of E. A. Langridge (Seddon). Several breeders received 20gns or better. Top price last year was 18gns. The best rams made from 19gns to Signs, good from 14gns to 18gns, ordinary from lOgns to 13gns, and inferior from Signs to 9gns. The Leicesters Once again, the English Leicesters met a most discouraging market. The entry was reduced to 263 from 422 last year, but this restriction c-f the supply had little effect on the bidding, which was slack. More than 100 rams were passed. The entry was drawn from the principal Canterbury studs, which , deserve commendation on their policy of putting before buyers the highest quality rams despite most discouraging results in recent years. Yesterday’s entry was of high merit, but it evoked little response from buyers. Top price was 9ns, paid for a choice pen of four from McDonald Bros. (Winchmore). They also secured the second price. Signs, with another pen of four. The best rams made irom 6gns to 9gns, with others from 2gns to sgns, a range which corresponds with that of last year. Top price last year was lOgns. Many farmers still find heavy lambs profitable, and the Border Leicesters had a considerably better run, and averaged about 2gns more than at last year’s fair. Passings were only 19 out of a total entry of 191. Last year’s entry was 196. The quality of the rams offered was generally good, though there was a noticeable "tail.” Bidding was brisk throughout for the better sheep. Top price was lOJgns, secured for a pen from the estate of James Stevenson (Flaxton). Canterbury Agricultural College (Lincoln) sold three rams at 9gns. Top price last year was BJgns. The better rams ranged from 6gns to lOJgns, and others from 3gns to sgns. Ryelands Improve The Ryeland entry was 157, a good advance on last year’s offering of 133. The breed is slowly gaining in popularity, particularly in southern districts, and after a rather slow start, bidding yesterday was good. On an average, prices were better than last year by about Ign. The selection of rams was of excellent quality, and was well got up. Top price was lOgns, which was secured oy Jos. Brooks (Brookside) with pens of three and two. He secured 9gns for another pen of three, and this price was received for two pens of two each from A. R. Marfell (Seddon), and a pen of two from Robt. Reid (Darfield). Top price last year was lOJgns. The best rams made from 7gns to lOJgns, and others from 2igns to 6gns. There was a very sound deriand for the small but choice offering of S iropShires. The entry numbered 23 against nine last year, and included several rams of the highest quality. Jos. Brooks (Brookside) topped the market with an outstanding' ram' which made 17igns, and sold twd more at lOgns. E. L. Wyles (Amberley) sold singles at llgns, lOgns, and 9gns. Four rams and two ram lambs were offered in the Southdown-Suffolk section. Last year 47 of this cross were offered, and the supply yesterday was obviously much too small for the requirements of buyers. The cross has an increasing popularity, and always sells well, but yesterday’s values were exceptional. Two of the rams made 7jgns and lOgns, and two, from H. C. Neave (Irwell) made 25gns. The ram lambs, which were from the same breeder, made llgns and 12gns. Top price last year was 14gns. (3nly three Shropshires were entered.

More than 300 Southdown ewes were offered the ram sale, but met a, dragging market. Prices ranged from 2gns to 14gns. The fair will concluded to-day with the offering of about 1100 Romney Marsh, 800 I Corriedales, and 420 halfbreds. The total I entry this year is 4338 against 5105 last year. The sales were, rams being one-shear unless otherwise stated:— SOUTHDOWN National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., sold on account of:— Leslie H.
