“WILDFLOWER” SEASON OPENS TO-MORROW

J. C. Williamson’s new comera opera company will open a season in Christchurch to-morrow afternoon with the musical romance “Wildflower.” “Wildflower” has a good plot, which is unfolded against a background of effective scenes. It has not only story and music, but also a rich leaven of comedy. The story relates the singular experiences of Nina, an Italian girl, who is left a fortune on condition that she does not show her hitherto intractable temper/ This part is taken by Joy Beattie. There are other claimants to the fortune including a rascally lawyer, Gaston (played by Dennis Hartley) and an unscrupulous suitor, Luigi (Vaughan Tracy), who plot for Nina's undoing, but she triumphs in the end. Marie Ryan is delightfully arch as Lucrezia and Phil Jay, a newcomer to musical comedy, has the part of a simple-minded rustic, Gabriel. The popular musical numbers inr elude “Wildflower.” “Bambalina,” “Good-bye, Little Rosebud,” and “April Blossoms.” There are some striking dance scenes, in which Norma Neville and Betty Pounder have the leading parts, and there is a sprightly ballet. The tuneful chorus makes full use of its opportunities.
