The American Way Fresh from the . Antarctic, three American ratings on Friday afternoon demonstrated that they were not prepared to be outdone in generosity. Entering a prepayment restaurant which happens to be owned by a fellow-American long resident in New Zealand, they approached the payment counter and were told by the proprietor that he would charge them nothing for their meals, “because,” he said, “if you fellows had not helped us in 194243 we might to-day be pullipg rickshaws.” To which the three ratings merely answered: “Okay!” and then ate handsomely. But when they were gone-the proprietor found three sums of money placed under three plates, amounting to £1 9s, approximately triple the price of their meals.
