N.S.W. TEAM AT DUNEDIN

FAST AND EXCITING EVENTS

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 9. The New South Wales swimming team made its first appearance at the Dunedin carnival arranged by the Kiwi Club which organised the tour. There was a big crowd and many hundreds were unable to gain admission. The swimming was of a very high standard. Miss U Crittenden, the New South Wales freestyle champion, won the 50 yards invitation women’s freestyle scratch race in 29 4-ssec after a thrilling duel with Miss Jaqueline Fraser, the Otago 100 yards champion, who was beaten by the barest margin. Miss Betty Casey, Wellington and New Zealand freestyle champion, was third. The 100 yards race was exciting, Miss Crittenden being overhauled in the last lap by Miss Casey, who shared first place in 66 2-ssec. Miss Fraser was a yard back third. Miss Noelene Maclean, the former Australian junior champion, won the international scratch diving competition from Miss Betty Moore (Otago), Miss M. Reid (Otago), the New Zealand champion, diving disappointingly to take third place Miss Ngaire Lane, the New Zealand women’s backstroke champion, won the 100 yards invitation short limit backstroke handicap in 73sec, and the 100 yards women’s medley scratch race in Imin 21 l-ssec. k , Lyall Barry (Nelson), the New Zealand 220 yards men’s freestyle champion,

won the 220 yards short limit in 2min 22 l-sesec, a record for the pool, and only 1 2-ssec outside the New Zealand record.

SPREYDON CLUB’S CARNIVAL

The Spreydon Amateur Swimming Club held a carniVal at the Spreydon Baths on Saturday. In the reSults, the following abbreviations are used:—Sp., Spreydon; L., Linwood; W., Wharenui; Syd., Sydenham; R., Riccarton. Results:— 25 yards handicap, under 11: Miss M. Houghton (Sp.) 1, Miss J.
