AMERICAN LINER ON FIRE

HEAVY DAMAGE DONE (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 8. The Maritime Commission considers it unlikely that the liner John Ericsson, which was heavily damaged when she caught fire at a New York pier, will go to sea again. The damage is estimated at 1,500,000 dollars. The John Ericsson was the former Swedish-American Line luxury liner Kungsholm, which the Maritime Commission purchased late in 1941 for 7,000,000 dollars. It was planned to reconvert the liner this year, but the reconversion and repair of the fire damage will cost 10,000.000 dollars, which is considered prohibitive. The fire, which took three hours to control, apparently was caused by a short circuit. The liner was not burned at the same pier as the NorI mandie, but at a neighbouring pier.
