MOON AS NEW RADIO CHANNEL
AMERICAN ENGINEERS’ PLAN (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK March 8. A plan to. form a new radio channel between the eastern and western hemispheres by bouncing short radio waves off the moon was announced by engineers of the Federal Telephone and Radio Corporation at the convention of the Institute of Radio Engineers. Much of the necessary apparatus is already fully planned or • partially built. Tests will be made in the near future to discover if the moon is “electrically smooth .or rough.” These tests will determine whether the channel can carry a full range of radio wave lengths, including facsimile and television. Engineers say that if the moon is actually covered by electrical atmosphere similar to the “radio roof” above the earth, the problem of getting good reflections should be highly simplified. ’ It is also pointed out that the whole plan would be limited to the hours and days during which the moon would be visible over the transmitting site and over the area to be served.
