PRICE OF APPLES AND PEARS
INCREASE IN RETAIL FIGURE GRANTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 8. The Government had given consideration to the request made by the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation on behalf of the applegrowers for an increased return for the 1947 season in order to assist the industry, stated the Minister of Agriculture (Mr E. L. Cullen). The Government had decided to allow an increase of id - per lb in the retail prices of apples and pears. “The wages subsidies at present operating and the subsidy which would have been necessary to meet the 194647 wage agreement will now be obsorbed within this general increase granted to the industry,” added the Minister. “The effect of this increase, the whole of which is to go to the grower, should make it possible, subject to seasonal and crop conditions, for the net payments effected through the Fruit Marketing Council to be increased by approximately Is a case over the 1946 season realisations.
