HANHAM WINS TIMARU BOUT From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, January 27. Using effective left jabs and hooks to his opponent’s head, and hard right swings to his body, Cliff Hanham (list 61b), of Romahapa, gained a points decision oVer Doug. Rollinson (12st 31b), of Auckland, in a professional light heavyweight boxing contest in the Theatre Royal, Timaru, to-night. There was a full house. Hanham showed his ability to box Rollinson in out-fighting, although the latter was aggressive throughout the 12 rounds. Forcing the fight from the outset, Rollinson favoured bustling tactics, but frequently clinched to save himself from Hanham’s damaging left, which caused Rollinson to miss with punches. The winner’s defence in out-fighting was almost impenetrable, the majority of Rollinson’s blows landing on his arms and shoulders. Although he landed most of the blows in in-fighting, Rollinson punched the back and side of his opponent’s body with rights, and was warned for kidney punching; whereas Hanham’s hard rights connected with Rollinson’s solar pleuxs. Knowing that with Hanham’s lead on points he would have to register a knockout to win, Rollinson rallied from the beginning of the tenth round. However, Hanham’s left and his sound defence stopped Rollinson from doing much damage. The decision was a popular one. Preliminary Bouts In the preliminary amateur bouts some scientific and spirited boxing was seen. Results were:— Welter-weight.—Pat Dwyer (Wigram), list 21b, beat Rex Chooque (Dunedin), lOst 91b. Light-weight.—V. Woods (Timaru), 9st 121 b. beat D. Sheddon (Waimate), 9st 51b, B. Newitt (Lyttelton). 9st 21b, beat J. Birt (Temuka), 9st 111 b. Fly-weight.—J. Pile (Ashburton), 7st 41b, beat Lewis (Waimate), 7st 71b. Paper-weight.—R. Eddington (Waimate), Sst 31b, beat J. Coulter (Ashburton), sst 61b; G. Chang (Waimate). 6st 71b, beat Chalmers (Picton), 6st 91b, on a technical knock-out.
