CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY SEEKS TENANCY

“Advice has been received from the State Advances Corporation that the Associated Consumers’ Co-operative Society will be accepted as a tenant of the shops being erected in the State housing block at Riccarton, provided that at least two-thirds of the residents in the area propose to be covered by the shops (whether State tenants or not) become members of the society, and provided that preference is given in employment to qualified former servicemen,’’ states a circular which has been issued by the society to tenants in the area. “The society has completed negotiations for the purchase of a grocery shop in another suburban area,” the circular continues, “and it will shortly be serving members located adjacent to that particular shop. Arrangements have been completed for the supply of rationed commodities, and this society has been assured that the goods in short supply will be available in all our shops in accordance with the number of customers.” Details are also given of other proposed services, including the sale of toilet goods and medicines, and the opening of a central emporium in the city area for the supply of clothing and similar lines. The number of members which will be required from the district is given as 250. Tenants Association Formed A public meeting of tenants of the block was held this week to consider negotiations for a community hall, and to discuss the future of co-operative shops in the area. The meeting was opened by the convener Mr H. R. Peers, who outlined the benefits to be derived from the formation of a tenants’ association

It was decided to form a tenants’ association of Riccarton. and the following officers were elected: —president. Mr A V. Harris; vice-president. Mr J. Coulter: secretary-treasurer. Mr C. Roscoe: committee. Mesdames Davidson. Drury. Peers. A. Smith. Messrs C R. Buckley. H. R. Peers. T Smith. C. Smith, and E. Snook.
