DEATH OF HEAD OF WORLD BANK
FORMER U.S. BUDGET DIRECTOR
(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 23. The death has occurred of Mr Harold D. Smith, acting head of the World Bank and former Director of the United States Budget, from a heart attack. Mr Smith resigned as Director of the Budget in June to become vicepresident of the World Bank. When Mr Eugene Meyer resigned as president in December. Mr Smith also offered his resignation but consented to remain until the appointment of Mr Meyer’s successor, which so far has not been made.
