EUROPEAN UNION PLAN
ATTITUDE OF BRITISH LABOUR (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, January 24. In spite of reports that the Labour Party executive at its meeting this week would consider Mr Churchill s British committee to further the cause of the union of Western Europe, the subject has not been discussed. Suggestions that the Labour Party will actively discourage its members from participating in the movement are discounted, but it is known that the party leaders regard the campaign with marked reservations.
At present a number of members of the party have indicated their approval of the plan, but the fact that Government support of the scheme might seriously embarrass the British Government’s relations with the Soviet Union is not overlooked. It is considered that Mr Churchill’s presidency of the committee, in addition to the fact that the union of Western Europe which is envisaged does not include Russia, is likely to outweigh in the Soviet mind the fact that a number of prominent Left Wing supporters in Britain are also members of the committee-
