THE WANGANELLA
Sir, —Off the West Coast of the South Island a 40-foot launch was held on the rocks by the bows. After the marine experts had given up their unsuccessful attempts to haul it off with launches and winches, a landlubber suggested loading the stern with rocks. This was done, and the craft then floated off by itself. Would it be possible with a similar method to assist the removal of the Wanganella by flooding the water-tight compartments aft? There is a case on record of a motor truck being jammed under a railway bridge. Engineers failed to pull it out with a traction engine, but a small boy solved the problem when he said. “Let the tyres down.”—Yours, etc.. SETH NEWELL. January 23, 1947.
