CANTERBURY EXHIBITION
from • the report in nn« e i re t S ° f Thursday, that the proposal to hold an exhibition in 1949-50 has not, after all, been dropped. On occ , aslons last year, in letters in your columns, I asked questions aS to the effect which the building of the proposed exhibition would have upon the housing programme. We have still not been told, even approximately, the number of houses (if any) the construction of which would be delayed, no. how long the delay would be.— Yours, etc., _ H. S. HAMILTON. January 23, 1947. NEWS What “Civilised News” has written is quite true. The cable news (usually of a political or of a catastrophic nature) gives one an extremely vague idea of what is transpiring over?eaf- * r ead recently that Mr Auriol is the new President of France, and th ; quadruplets had been born in that land; but I had to go to a French newspaper to. learn the following:—Of the 6700 road bridges destroyed there during the war, 5886 have already been rebuilt. Of the 2600 railway bridges and viaducts, and 3800 miles of permanent way destroyed, practically all are again carrying’ trains; and the traffic is almost equal to that of 1938. Of the 5150 miles of navigable waterways rendered useless, all but 70 miles are again in use. Four times as many people who journeyed by plane in 1939 now go by eir, and so on. What an inspiring picture of progress!—Yours, etc., e F.H.W. January 22, 1947.
