FOOD AND FAT FOR BRITAIN
Sir, —I felt very indignant with a correspondent who impudently suggests that our school, children be deprived of milk at school so as to make more butter and cheese for Britain. There have been many insinuations that New Zealand is not helping Britain enough; but what household is not helping with gift parcels and supplies to relief depots? Recently 21 shiploads of butter, oheese, and meat left our shores, so as to make a happier Christmas for the English people. Personally, I think more help could be had from Britain hereslf. What of the thousands of acres of reserve lands used for private parks and pheasant shooting, which could well run cows? Mr Churchill is now keeping a dairy farm, thereby setting a good -example. New Zealand, with rationing and gift parcels, has made a very good effort to date. “Whipping the horse that willingly pulls” is a foolish policy.— Yours, etc.. H.S. January 23, 1947.
