Press Association—Copyright) Stowaway on Trans-Atlantic Plane. —A Russian-born blonde, Anna Zemit, aged 37, reached Shannon, Eire, by a Constellation aeroplane bound from Newfoundland to Paris after having stowed away on a Paris-Iceland-New-foundland aeroplane. It is believed that she is the first successful transAtlantic air stowaway. The authorities discovered her at Newfoundland, and they are now returning her to Paris. The Eire police are keeping her m the Limerick gaol for two days because the aircraft has engine trouble. Zemit, weeping, said: “I would rather spend my life/ in an Irish prison than return to Paris, where trouble is awaiting me.”—London. January 22. , Party for Female Prisoners.—As a result of a hilarious party enjoyed by female prisoners in the Stuart creek gaol, near Townsville, the host, Edward Clarence Long, aged 38, will serve a sentence of nine months, and two gaol officials have been suspended from duty. Long was released after serving a year’s sentence, and he felt so happy about it that he decided to entertain the friends he had left behind. He bought up a large supply of food and drinks, scaled the wall, reentered the gaol, and turned on a party for the female prisoners. The aftermath included a visit by the Comptroller of Prisons and reports to the Attorney-General.—Brisbane, January 23. Restoration of Mansion House in London.— War damage and the normal deterioration caused by time have so seriously affected the Mansion House, official residence of the Lord Mayor of London and the centre of the city’s civic administration, that it .will be necessary to spend between £40,000 and £50,000 to put the building in order and restore the decorations. Much of the damage was caused when a German bomb crashed through the roadway opposite the Mansion House and exploded in a nearby subway.— London, January 23. World Snooker Championship.— At the close of the third day’s play in the world’s professional snooker championship, Fred Davis leads the New Zealander, Clark McConachy, by 30 frames to six, and needs only seven of the remaining frames to win the match. Scores (Davis first): 40-76, 96-26, 94-16, 23-107, 58-29, 53-73, 84-44, 82-27, 47-57, 103-9, 85-29, 59-46.—Lon-don, January 22. £ 1000 Golf Tournament in Australia. —The Australian Golf Club has permitted the use of the Kensington links for the Ampol £lOOO professional golf tournament, for which entries from Australia and New Zealand are being sought. Play will begin on April 16, and will continue for four days. For practice rounds metropolitan players may use the links from April 8 to 11, and country and inter-state players from April 13 to 15. After a percentage of the gate money has been deducted for the general purposes of. the Professional Golfers’ Association the balance will be added to the prize money, which is expected to reach £2soo.—Sydney, January 23.
