CANADA’S NATIONAL INCOME
FISHERIES ONE OF BIG RESOURCES As a source of national income, fisheries rate as one of Canada’s greatest resources, states the New York “HeraldTribune.” Total production last year aggregated 1,250.000,000 pounds, valued at more than 100,000,000 dollars. Normally 75 per cent, of the catch of the Canadian fishihg industry goes intifii export, with the United States the largest customer. Through in- ' ternational agreement fur seal herds on the west coast have been built up from 150,000 to 3.000,000. Stocks of halibut In the North Pacific likewise have been more than doubled. Halibut fishing formerly wsa uncontrolled and was dangerously near extinction about 1930. The sockeye salmon treaty In 1937 probably saved Canada's greatest single fishing product. The output of salmon tttis year in British Columbia is estimated at 1,340,000 cases, down 400,000 cases from 1945.
