NAVAL BASE IN DODECANESE

RUSSIAN SUGGESTION TO GREECE

(Rec. JJ p.m) LONDQN, March 1. The Russian Government has informally claimed another Russian naval base in the Mediterranean in the Dodecanese, says the diplomatic correspondent of the “Daily Herald.” The Russian Ambassador at Athens, last week, in conversations with the Prime Minister of Greece (Mr SofouIte), made a remarkable suggestion. He said Russia would be glad to supply Greece with wheat and coal, not as relief through UNRRA, fiu| ip exchange for tobacco chromium, and currants. However, Russia equid not refuel or refit ships carrying goods to Greece upjess part of the Dodecanese and surrounding territory were placed at her disposal. Normally, Russian ships trading to Greece would use the big, well-equip-ped ports of Salonika and Piraeus. Dodecanese ports are small, jH-equip-ped, and miles further on. A Greek economic expert said it was rather like asking for a naval pass in the Orkneys in order to trade with London and Liverpool.
