EVACUEES FROM EAST INDIES
♦ CHRISTCHURCH OFFICERS APPOINTED
The appointment of three executive members of .the Christchurch staff of the Netherlands Indies Welfare Organisation for Evacuees has been an-, nounced. Mr M. F. Foate, who was an accountant in practice in Christchurch... before entering the Air Force early in the war, is finance officer; Mr W. J. Heslop, also a Christchurch man, who was repatriated from a prison-of-war camp in Italy, is billeting officer; and Mr P. G. Forde, formerly Railway Transport Officer for the Army at Christchurch, is transport-officer. The , appointment of a welfare officer has yet to be announced. , : The first draft of 500 evacuees from ’ the East Indies is expected to in Christchurch in the middle of Feb-,; ruary. Arrangements are now being': made by the organisation to take over accommodation in and near. Christchurch, and the Welcome Club in.' Lichfield street will be established as. a welfare centre for the evacuees. -
The organisation is seeking the as--, sistance of the public in providing ac-, commod'ation. The evacuees will be given a monetary allowance on a fixed scale and will pay for their accommodation and for their clothing. Each draft is expected to stay about four months.
