TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES' AWARD

INTERPRETATION BY COURT Interpretation of the Christchurch Tramway, Omnibus, and Power-House Employess' Award has been given in a judgment delivered by the Court of Arbitration, The Court was asked whether it was permissible for the employer to roster broken shifts which required motormen and conductors tp exceed the spread of 11 hours in any one day. The judgment said that according to the statement of facts, the practice of rostering employees to work broken shifts over a greater spread of hours than that referred to in the award or industrial agreement in force had operated for 30 years. Certain new words had been added to a clause of the present award, but the words extended the information which was to be shown in rosters, and clearly did not abrogate the long-stand-ing practice.

An affirmative answer was given to the question.
