TURF GOSSIP

South Canterbury Combined Hunt Acceptances for all events for the South Canterbury and Christchurch Combined Hunt Clubs close on Tuesday, July 24, at 9 p.m. —6 Riccarton Under Snow A visit paid to the Riccarton racecourse yesterday revealed the serious condition of the tracks and grounds, and supported the opinions of the course superintendent, trainers, and others that unless the we'ather changes the Canterbury Jockey Club will have to consider postponing at least the first day’s programme of the Grand National Steeplechase meeting, scheduled for Saturday of next week. There is at present a general depth of six to eight inches of frozen snow over the wlvole course, with no sign of its decreasing in volume to any extent, and unless heavy rain or a north-west gale intervenes this week, racing in less than a fortnight's time will be out qf the question. In any case, it will not be possible to use any of the training tracks for galloping or the schooling steeplechase, course within the coming week, and this will so seriously check the preparation of horses, especially those that did not have a race at Trenthnm, tnat the Helds for the first day will suffer. , A big team of men worked over the week-end, clearing away the saow piled behind the grandstands, so as to give access to the various buildings, but any attempt to do similar work on the course would be futile. The only track open at present is the sand, and this has been fit for use mostly in the afternoons. Only pace work is possible on it, so in the meantime there is no hope of horses getting any galloping. The course superintendent has used and is using every effort in his power to solve the problem, but the only course open is to adopt a waiting policy. Unusual Performance

Valky’s Boy achieved some fame on Saturday by winning two steeplechases in one day. He won the Maiden Steeplechase at Awapuni by three lengths, and four races later won the Combined Hunt Cup Steeplechase by four lengths. He is a rising six-year-old gelding by Gay Boy from Valky by Valkyrian, and is trained by his owner, Mr R. Heppner, a Manawatu hunting enthusiast, valky’s Boy had only two previous races this season, at Hastings and at Wanganui. Easy Task Ballyneety had a decisive win in the Hack Hurdles at Awapuni. He is a flve-year-old gelding by Dink from Hasty Match, by Defoe from Idanoe, by Kllbroney from Glen Helen. He ran fourth' in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham, and was then labelled as a light-weight possibility in the Grand National Hurdles, but was not accepted for last week. Ballyneety is trained at Te Rapa by J. L. Muir. Justified Support Arco, winner of the First Flying Hack Handicap at Awapuni, carries the same colours as Foxlana and is trained by C. Thomson. He is a rising four-year-old gelding by Coronach from Aratulla, by Arausio from Martulla, by Martian from Tortulla, and was bred by his owner. Arco was considered unlucky in not beating Master Robin on the second day at Trentham, and this effort accounted for his comparatively short price on Saturday. A Stable Double Swift Jay paid a good double-figure dividend when she won the Champion Hack Cup at Awapuni. She is a rising five-year-old mare by Jay from Rukatere, by Swift Flight from Kakama, by Soult from’ Winsome, and is owned by her trainer, G. W. New. Swift Jay won a maiden event in Marton in December, but this was her only placing in 11 starts before Saturday. New’s stable, now in charge of E. Parker, was represented by another winner in Solver, by Vermeer. This was Solver's first win in 15 starts this season Including two at Riccarton In the spring.

The rising six-year-old gelding, Robert, by Foxlight from Timorous, by Cllef Ruleri from Timid, has been purchased by the Oamaru trainer. N. J. Dwyer. Robert was previously trained at Hastings by G. Greene, and in 11 starts this season had one win and a second. Formidable Candidate Flying Spy is due to arrive at Riccarton next week. She has failed in her races to date this winter, no doubt because her preparation has been interfered with by minor mishaps, but she should have benefited by her two efforts at Trentham. Flying Spy is approaching her eighth year, and at such an age any great improvement cannot be expected, but she would only need to be in something like her last year’s form to repeat her success in the Grand National Hurdle Race. She is to be retired to the stud on her return to Hastings.

P *U was reported in the North Island last week that Kilmanagh was an unlikely visitor to Riccarton, and that her last race of the winter would be at Hastings on Grand National Day. She was, accepted for in the big event last week, and is evidently to.be sent south. Kilmanagh has contested 11 Jumpln, and has won three and has had four second placings for stakes amounting to £IBBS Bv Siegfried. Kilmanagh has dis- ' played marked stamina in her races, and she may do well at Riccarton. Another for Australia ~ has The Auckland sprinter, Sleepy Fox, has been shipped to Sydney to race at the soring meetings. He has been nominated for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but is likely to be kept in Sydney where he will contest welght-for-age events inch as the Warwick Stakes Canterbury Stakes Challenge Stakes, and Hill Stakes. Sleepv Fox is rising six years. and has won over £7OOO in stakes for his owners, the Hon E. R. Davis and Mr O. Nicholson, in starts to date, he has won 10 races ind has four seconds and three thirds. His Accesses included the last two Easter Handicaps at Ellerslie. and he won the Huia Handicap on the same course three years in succession. AUSTRALIAN RACING repshot wins doomben « CUP JOCKEYS SEARCHED FOR BATTERIES (Rec. 6.30 p.m ) BRISBANE, July 22 Following his head defeat in the Doomhen Newmarket Handicap last Sa.urday, Repshot yesterday won the Doomben Cup ?ft o r a series of incidents which made the race cne of the most sensational ever run ' n The pre-post favourite Brumond was nearly thrown over the rails at the half--1 mile 'nest The hose received a gash ■m t h e off-side flank and the jockey.
