REVOCATION OF TAXI LICENCES
o ALARM EXPRESSED AT R.S.A. MEETING
A resolution “viewing with alarm the action of the Appeal Board and Mr Justice Frazer in putting these min out of business” was carried at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Returnee Services’ Association last evening, after a discussion on the revocation of taxi licences granted recently to returned servicemen by the Transport Licensing Authority.' ■ ' The discussion was opened when Mr L. W. Hobby moved that the association support the endeavours of returned men to rehabilitate themselves in business. He said that two men had each put £SOO into their taxi business, but an appeal against the granting of their licences, made by a rival company, had been allowed by Sir Francis Frazer. The same sort of thing would happen again. After this motion had been carried, a second one expressing alarm at the decision of Sir Francis Frazer was moved. The mover said the decision affected more than the men concerned in this case, and that a resolution of the meeting might do some good. The president (Mr D. W, Russell) suggested that the question be referred to the Dominion executive. It was unwise to attack a Judge. A voice: We are not attacking Mr Justice Frazer; we are only viewing with alarm.
Another man said that every time a returned man applied for a taxi’ licence the taxi companie. went to the Licensing Authority and opposed the application. An amendment that the matter be referred to the Dominion executive for full inquiry was lost, and the motion was carried by a large majority.
