TURF GOSSIP

South Canterbury Jockey Club Acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's winter meeting close Today (Tuesday), May 15th, at 9 p.m. —6 Answer to Correspondent: "A.W.," Okaln’s Bay. £1 17s 6d and £2 3s 6d. Test Pilot Test Pilot’s fourth appearance in pubUc at Oamaru on Saturday was awaited with much interest, as a high opinion has been held of him as a jumper likely to reach eood class. Unfortunately he has run off at the first fence in two of his races and fallen in another. At Riccarton at Easter he evaded the first fence of the.first .day s hurdle race, artd on Saturday he did the ■same thing In the hack steeplechase. On Saturday he was not given much chance of approaching the fence, as Pilot Officer bored away from the fence long before reaching it, and took Test Pilot wth him. Test Pilot was taken back and followed the field at a Kjng interval, thus getting some useful schooling, and he did not show any inclination to run Off at any of the fences he jumped. Both horses, which are by Sky Pilot are the hack steeplechase at Washdyke this week.

Disappointed Royal Rae was expected to take a prominent part in the decision of the Oamaru Winter Cup, but after drawing No. 1 at the barrier, was squeezed back on the fence over the .early stages, and When the back stretch was reached he was one of the rear division. With a close-running field, he was not well favoured for the remalner of the Journey, and finished well back. . Out of Form , . , „ . Sumfa was confidently supported on Saturday to repeat her winning form at last month's meeting at Oamaru, but although she was well enough placed for home, she .finished near the rear. Like others of J. R. Cochrane's team at present, she has failed badly in recent attempts. A Class Sprinter ‘. Green Note showed her capability In. soft going when she won at Oamaru, and with a holding track again likely at Washdyke, she should carry on as a winner. She is a five-year-old mare by Paper Money from Green Dart by Last Dart from Green Isle by Maniapoto, and is trained at Invercargill. A New Role Gamble raced in behind the speedy leaders Peter Gazelle and Green Note until the straight was reached, and then put in some telling work to get within a length of the winner. On his second placings in both the Ashburton and Oamaru sprints, he will, probably be kept to short races during the winter. Taking Shape Foxchase was in poor condition when he arrived at Wingatiil after being sent south from Trentham in January, and some time elapsed before he showed any improvement. He has come to hand well of late, and was paraded In fairly robust order at Oamaru. He did not have many followers in his six furlong task, ahd after being slow to find his feet, he occupied last place throughout. Foxchase has performed well under winter conditions, and should be prominent over middle distances later in the south. First Placing Nightwink, which was prominent for a good way in the mile hack race at Oamaru, is a three-year-old filly by Nightmarch from Wlnk-a-peep. dam of Star Raider and Phalanx She was bred by Mr D. Spence, who sold her earlier In the season. and she is now in the stable of the Wingatui trainer J A. Wilson, who trains Honest Sal for Mr Spence.

Below Anticipations Lost Art has been an expensive horse in the last few months, and has failed to race up to the encouraging form he showed in the early autumn He is raced by Messrs Grant and Turton, who had a run of success with the well-known pacer Fine Art.

TROTTING NOTES

Combined Trotting Clubs Entries for all events, Including the two-year-old parade, at the combined trotting club’s matinee meeting,- will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday next. —1 Matinee at Addington

The next Christchurch trotting meeting will be held at Addington on May 26, when the Combined Christchurch Troting Clubs will give £750 and trophies at a matinee meeting for maiden and Improving horses. The totallsator will not operate. Retired

Mrs M. Snell recently purchased Erinack, a mare by Wrack from Erin s Fortune, and she has finished her racing career. Erinack has been booked to Jack Potts for next season. Not Right Yet

P P. Gallagher's Injuries, suffered when Copper Trail fell in the New Zealand Pacing Stakes, are taking longer to mend than was expected, and the Washdyke trainer is still off the active list. Run of Seconds

Last season A. Holmes had an exasperating run of second placings with Worthy Gold in the classics and semi-classics, and he is having much the. same luck with Local Gold' at present. Taken to Auckland for the Eighth Great Northern Trotting Stake*, the Gold Bar filly led Into the straight but was no match for Highland Fling In the run home. The Tenth Timaru Nursery Stakes followed, and once again she was runner-up to Highland Fung. She was not at her best in this race, as she was suffering from the effects of a fall on the morning of the race and the after-effects kept her from racing at the Easter meeting. On Saturday, Local Gold began smoothly to follow Sprayman In the early part of the race, and she was not asked for her effort until the straight was reached. Although, she was doing her best, the filly could not hold off Globe Direct, and once again she finished in second place. As Her record of three placings in three starts indicates she is an honest pacer, and her turn should soon come. Local Gold, which was bred by her trainer, A. Holmes, races In the Interests of Mr J. Parsons, who purchased her last November.

Likely Type The Indianapolis colt Indian Quest followed up his second placing to Maalesh in the Wainui Handicap at Wellington with a third to Josalle and Fair Play In a division race at Claudelands, With firm track conditions this three-year-old should be seen to better advantage.

Changed Conditions On a hard track at Ashburton, True Potts established a good lead in the Selma Trot, but could ijdt see the two-mile journey out. The mile and a - half at Oamaru was expected to suit the Jack Potts gelding, but he did not seem to appreciate the changed track conditions and finished about seven lengths behind the winner in fourth place.

Well Supported The little-known Redcliffe Direct, a roan horse by Wellington Direct from Pretty Pointer, was backed down to 2-2 in the betting on the Waikaura Handicap at Oamaru, and just failed by a he&d after a struggle with Worthy Gold in the straight. Redcliffe Direct, which is owned by Mr J. Hamilton and trained by H. Reid, was always prominent in the running and should be an early winner.

Trained by Owner Peter Pointer, which finished second to Popular Girl in a division at ■ Hamilton, was in S. M. August’s stable early in the season, but he is now trained by G. Bauern who races him in partnership with R. Martin. Peter Pointer is a six-year-old gelding by Jewel Pointer from Gold Bell.
