TOYMAKERS SEEK AWARD
♦ —- APPLICATION REFERRED BACK TO CONCILIATION COUNCIL After hearing argument in the Court of Arbitration in Christchurch yesterday concerning an application for an award for those engaged in the manufacture of wooden toys, novelties, and household woodware, Mr justice Tyndall (who presided) directed that the dispute should be referred back to the Conciliation Council. On behalf of the employers Mr H. FI Rutland said that (he applicant union (the Christchurch and Greymouth Federated Furniture and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers) had not discharged -the onus upon it cf supporting its claims by supplying sufficient 1 evidence to the Court on which an award could be made. The industry, he said, was not covered by an award in Canterbury or any other district. "The onus of supplying that information should not fall upon the respondents,” he added. In the period of the war years, said Mr E. R. Clark (for the union), the industry had grown because imports had practically ceased. A considerable section of workers who had never worked under an award were now desirous of having one. ~ ,
