ENEMY MOVE IN CHINA
OPERATIONS IN HONAN CONTROL OF RAILWAYS IN DISPUTE (Rec. 7 p.m.) CHUNGKING. April 18. The Japanese have started a new drive, believed to be aimed at closing the gap in the Peiping-Hankow railway. The Associated Press says that further details are awaited before assessing the scope of the Operation, which is based on the town of Chungmow; in the north of Honan Province, Entrenched Chinese are reported to be engaged in severe fighting against Japanese who .crossed, an inundated region in the Chungmow area. An official bulletin says that the new enemy attack was launched after the arrival of considerable reinforcements. A spokesman has estimated that the Japanese will need four divisions to clear the Peiping-Hankow railway and 10 divisions to clear the railway to the south from Hankow to Canton. The Associated Press points out that control of these railwavs would cut China in two, neutralising Allied bases east of the railways, and giving the Japanese a badly needed overland route to replace the crippled shipping route along the coast. It is suggested that the new drive might be synchronised with Japanese assaults on the Chinese-India supply
